In development: a scholarship award for daughters of inmates
in The Federal Prison for Women, Alderson, West Virginia.
Education makes the first difference. Period.
The unPrison Project advocates for education for women in prisons and their children, especially their school-age daughters. The 800% increase in incarceration for women over the last 10 years speaks to this need for change.
Education, hope, and life skills lessons can help change this rate of crime and related drug addiction, and imprisonment.
Coming in 2012, a pilot project to award scholarships to girls entering college for undergraduate study.
First qualification: a mother incarcerated in The Federal Prison for Women, Alderson, West Virginia. Awards will be granted based on the following:
- Academic merit
- Letters of recommendation from teachers
- A personal statement
- Need
